Fulfilling filial piety might not make us rich, but it sure builds up harmony in the family. This harmony brings us peace.
When a child is very dutiful to his parents, he will not be selfish because he concerns about his parents’ need. He will not be lazy because he will help his parents by doing all the house works that he can handle. From doing these house chores, he learns that one needs to put in great effort in order to have things done. Thus he will appreciate his parents’ hard working in raising him. He will not waste food and things because he realize everything come from his parents’ hard-earn money. Because of this filial piety, he will watch his attitude, speech, and behavior, so he will not hurt his parents in anyway. With this alertness, his virtue will be built-up day by day. People who are virtuous can turn disaster into safety. Their kind virtue will touch the sky and earth.
1). In Yuan Dynasty, there once a powerful earthquake that cause damage in ten thousand eight hundred areas. All the houses fall apart except Zhong Lee’s house. Zhong Lee is a very dutiful person. Because of his virtue, when the earthquake come to his house, the epicenter line split into two and move around his house. Right after his house, the two line join back together and continue down the road. Truly incredible!
2). Last May in Sichuan, China, there is one school has not been destroyed within the disaster area. All the kids who attend that school survive in this shocking earthquake. From his humble reply to the news reporter, we learned that this person, who is in charge of the school, has a very considerate heart of loving-kindness. Later, both the school and the personnel gain high reputation from people around the world.
As we can see from these two true stories, when a person practice great virtue, not only he can save himself, he saves people around him as well. Building up one’s virtue is the most effective way to turn bad karma into good ones. This all start from doing our duties sincerely toward our parents and family members. From there, we get rid of the bad habit of being self-center (or selfish), restore our natural loving-kindness, and live happily with dignity.
